how to design product labels

Product packaging and labeling plays an important role in determining how strongly your product will stand out in a saturated marketplace. No matter what the quality of your product is, if you fail to present it in the right way, you’ll eventually end up on the losing side. There are five basic principles behind crafting an ideal product label – let’s find out what they are!

Keep It to the Point

Compromising with the content and complicating the custom printed label design can be extremely detrimental for your business, as it will divert your potential customers if you fail to represent the necessary facts about the product. You need to do a little research and check out the labeling of some of the branded products relevant to that of yours. This will give you a clear idea as to what exactly the popular brands have on their labels that make them worth recognition. A couple of basic questions that should be answered on a label are the description and the associated brand.  Don’t make it too hard for the consumers to look briefly into the details.

Keep It Unique

Label print is a form of marketing that aims at designating a particular product with a unique identity separating it from the others. You have to try something different from the crowd, although taking inspiration from bigger brands is not a bad idea unless you fall to an extent where you have to face copyright issues. An ideal promotional label design is all about grabbing people’s attention at a single glance and you don’t want to give an impression of a design quite similar to that of your competitors. Be as innovative as you possibly can.

Keep It Real

Fake depiction of a product may just get you the initial hype, but the damage you incur in the long term is irreparable. This will give a bad taste to the consumers who will try your products for the first time and feel cheated.  Making false claims is only going to reduce the count of returning customers and in worst cases, you might also be charged with legal action by the consumer court. Hence, it’s advisable to portray the brand in the truest manner, without betraying the consumers with deceptive information.

Keep It Adjustable

It’s certain that you are not selling one kind of a product in a marketplace and even if you are, there must be different sizes of the products being sold. In any case, you need to have a label design that fits right to all sorts of proportions. Having an adjustable print design not only saves total cost of labeling, but also imparts distinct brand identity, irrespective of the kind of product.  Never try to tinker with the basics!

Highlight the Plus Points

If you are introducing a unique product in the market or a product with a unique feature, make sure to mention it on the label, since such information may boost your sales double fold. Say for instance, if you are selling organic food, printing “100% Organic” is not a bad idea if you are looking to target a particular set of audience. If your production is region-based, it’s a good idea to mention the native ingredients.
